Stony Run Stream Restoration: A Diamond in the Rough

Katie Atkinson, PE, Project Manager, Timmons Group

Zach Harwood, Environmental Programs Specialist, Henrico County

The Stony Run Stream Restoration project centered on restoring approximately 1300 linear feet of a third order stream located behind a decommissioned landfill. The design process for this channel began in early 2018, with construction concluding in December of 2022. Restoration on third order streams comes with its own unique set of challenges, with the Stony Run Stream Restoration being no exception.

This presentation will focus on the benefits of identifying those challenges early in the analysis process, and in turn using them to strengthen final design. It will touch on several unique site characteristics, as well as strategies employed to ensure the success of the design.
