Bridging the Gap: Collaboration Between Engineers and Contractors

Jesse M. Pope, PE, CFM, Senior Water Resources Engineer, Stantec Consulting Services, Inc

Effective collaboration between engineers, owners, and contractors is critical for the success of any project.  Engineers can gain critical insights from the hands-on problem-solving skills and real-world challenges faced by those who bring designs to life.  However, this communication with the contractor often does not begin until after the final design phase is completed.  Furthermore, challenges often arise during construction due to communication gaps, misaligned expectations, and differing priorities.  This presentation explores strategies to bridge these divides and foster a culture of mutual understanding and cooperation. Drawing on case studies, practical examples, and surveys from various contractors, important collaboration strategies will be highlighted.  In the surveys, contractors also point to concepts they believe engineers should more fully consider in the design process to improve constructability. By adopting these strategies, we can minimize delays, reduce costly errors, and enhance project outcomes. This presentation aims to equip participants with actionable insights to strengthen the engineer-contractor relationships and drive greater project success.
