Timmons Group is providing drainage and environmental improvement services to reduce water impacts and minimize safety concerns along a channel in Hampton, VA. The waterway currently flows through an old concrete channel that is in disrepair in several sections and is bordered with sites that have old concrete and construction debris buried. The City recognized this as a potential location to create a water quality benefit and better use the space by connecting citizens with the water that surrounds them. Timmons Group was able to work with the City to design multiple improvements into different locations on site, custom fitting each to the available space and to work with site constraints while providing an overall ecological uplift.

Included are a forest buffer, an offline stormwater wet pond, and a green channel with several different options that will provide a case study for future similar situations in the City where upland area connects to tidally influenced waters.

This presentation will examine the challenges and benefits of revitalizing old infrastructure and underused sites to create safer, community friendly amenities while also providing a better water resource for flora and fauna and generating pounds of pollutant reduction. What more could one project want?
