FROM MODELS TO CONSTRUCTION: REAL-WORLD APPLICATIONS OF H&H MODELING FOR CULVERT SYSTEMS & DAM IMPROVEMENTS
As water resource engineers & designers, we know that hydrologic & hydraulic modeling is essential for designing resilient stormwater infrastructure, particularly for culvert systems & improvements to existing Dams. This presentation intends to highlight two real-world case studies that our team progressed from modeling & design to successful construction, demonstrating the integration of site-specific data, modeling methodologies, & practical considerations. The first case study focuses on the expansion of an emergency spillway & raising of an existing embankment, leveraging 2D HEC-RAS modeling to simulate extreme flood scenarios & optimize hydraulic capacity. The second involves utilizing hydraulic modeling to quantify the feasibility of differing replacement designs for a culvert configuration in a flood-prone area. Emphasizing the use of rainfall-runoff data & stream flow analysis to assess regulatory-compliant solutions against site specific requirements. Key elements of the presentation will cover modeling inputs, design methodologies, & the construction process. Lessons learned during construction will also be shared, highlighting the importance of adaptability and collaboration in achieving project success.
